Mine Closure Research Project

With Australia’s success as a global leader in mining, it is not surprising the country is now home to approximately 400 mines due to close in the next 10 years.

More than ever, Australia needs a skilled and agile workforce with the ability to plan for and execute mine transitions that will benefit current and future generations of Australians and rehabilitate the natural habitats and environments of native flora and fauna.

Access to training and professional development for the workforce is vital to ensuring genuinely successful outcomes for all stakeholders.

We are working with the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) to review education and training options.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) is a dedicated research organisation focused on reimagining and dramatically transforming mine closure outcomes for the benefit of all Australians. CRC TiME brings together over 70 leading mining and mining service companies, regional development organisations, State and Commonwealth governments and research partners.

Prior to our establishment as a Jobs and Skills Council, AUSMASA successfully tendered for a contract with CRC TiME, to undertake a strategic review of the education and training options related to mine closure. The results of this research will inform the work of CRC TiME as it supports capacity-building activities and formal education courses. The work may also prove insightful for AUSMASA in its future activities as a Jobs and Skills Council.

Your feedback on the skills needed for successful mine closures

We conducted a survey on behalf of CRC TiME to better understand the needs for education and training related to mine closure and post-mine transitions for various cohorts. Mine closure awareness and education is crucial to the social and economic success of communities affected by post-mine sites.

This research will help us to build a profile of strategic and contemporary education and training needs as well as what options may be required to meet these. Closure awareness and education is crucial to the successful transition of post mine sites as well as broader social and economic transformations.

The survey closed on Friday 8th December. Thanks to all who completed the survey. We are compiling the results and look forward to sharing them soon.
