What We Do

We are the Jobs and Skills Council for the mining and automotive industries

Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs) have been established by the Australian Government to provide industry with a strong, more strategic voice in ensuring Australia’s VET sector delivers better outcomes for learners and employers

Strengthening the role of industry and empowering it to drive reforms to Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) system is key to ensuring employers and individuals can access the right skills at the right time.

Industries need a strong, strategic voice in VET to drive collaboration across sectors, address strategic workforce challenges and ensure qualifications are developed and updated faster to meet their evolving needs.

Reinvigorating the VET sector at a time of global economic uncertainty, will also support individuals to re-train and re-skill to find and stay in work, through courses that link with and build on their existing experience and training

The Australian Government has committed to delivering a collaborative, tripartite VET sector that brings employers, unions and governments together to find solutions to skills and workforce challenges.

Workforce planning

The future of the Australian workforce is changing. It is our role to identify, forecast and respond to current, emerging and future workforce challenges and opportunities. We do this through research and consultation, ensuring we have a focus on the skills that the mining and automotive industries need to attract workers and sustain our economy.

Industry stewardship

We are independent and industry-led, and also the trusted voice of industry when providing strategic advice to the government and the training sector on skills and workforce training needs.

Training product development

We are informed by comprehensive workforce analysis

We develop responsive and flexible training products

We ensure training products have high educational standing and can be readily delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)

We pilot emerging products and test new approaches to meet RTO, industry and learners’ needs

Implementation, promotion and monitoring

We work with industry, government and training providers to align training packages for learners, their delivery and outcomes, to industry needs

We map and promote career pathways in industry and ensure the right training is available to get people into in-demand jobs

We listen, we consult, and we act to drive continuous improvement so that learners can get into jobs faster with the right skills at the right time

Working with Jobs and Skills Australia

Jobs and Skills Australia works closely with JSCs to:

  1. Support the effective operation of JSCs by providing

    • baseline, whole-of-economy data and insights on current, emerging and future skills needs, including outputs from its workforce forecasting activities, as well as

    • data on VET system activity and performance.

  2. Integrate the sector-specific insights generated by JSCs into its analysis and advice, and rely on feedback from JSCs as key users to continuously improve its data products.

  3. Work closely with relevant JSCs when tasked with conducting deep-dive capacity studies into priority sectors (such as the Clean Energy Workforce study currently underway).
