Developing nationally recognised training products to support safe work around EV and battery technologies.
This project builds awareness of emerging safety risks in the evolving EV workforce
AUSMASA is undertaking a national consultation project to develop training products addressing a critical and growing workforce need for safety awareness around electric vehicles (EVs) and rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS).
As EV and battery technologies become increasingly prevalent across the mining, automotive, motorsport, manufacturing, and transport sectors, workers operating in these environments require a clear understanding of the associated hazards, risks, and safe work practices.
There are currently no nationally recognised training products that specifically address awareness-level safety requirements for non-technical workers working around EVs and RESS. This represents a significant gap in the national training system and highlights the need for consistent, industry-informed safety training.
AUSMASA will collaborate with other Jobs and Skills Councils, as well as employers, industry representatives, workers, and training stakeholders to identify the skills and knowledge required to support safe work practices in environments where EVs and RESS are present.
The findings from the initial development phase will inform the development of:
- 1 new unit of competency focused on safety awareness for non-technical workers
- 1 new skill set designed to support workforce capability across a range of industries.
These training products will improve workplace safety outcomes and support the safe adoption and operation of EV and battery technologies across Australia's evolving workforce.
The project is scheduled to commence in July 2026 and conclude in September 2027.

Expression of Interest (EOI) – Technical Committee (TC)
Please ensure you have read and agreed to the Working Safely in the Electric Vehicle Supply Chain TC Terms of Reference before you express your interest. The primary role of the TC is to advise AUSMASA on the training product design, development, delivery, assessment, and consultation strategy for the project.
TC members will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- their knowledge, skills, and industry experience relevant to working with or in relation to the project
- previous committee/advisory panel experience
- capacity to commit the time required by the TC
- willingness to collaborate with other TC members to achieve the objectives of the project
- an assessment of any declared, actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest.
