Mine Closure Skills Mapping Project

Mapping occupations, tasks and skills involved in mine closure

The Mine Closure Skills Mapping Project is a joint research initiative with CRC TiME. It aims to provide a clear, structured overview of the occupations, tasks, and skills required during the mine closure phase.

As the resources sector increasingly focuses on sustainable closure practices, environmental rehabilitation, and community transition, there is a growing need for a comprehensive understanding of workforce requirements across the final stages of a mine's life cycle. This project will examine the mine closure landscape to identify key roles, analyse the activities they perform, and determine how these responsibilities evolve across the life stages of a mining operation.

In this project, AUSMASA will collaborate with CRC TiME and consult with relevant stakeholders to map the occupations involved in mine closure and the specific tasks and skills associated with each role. The project will deliver a series of research outputs, including:

  • an overview of key occupations active during the closure phase
  • a detailed analysis of the tasks and capabilities required
  • a comprehensive skills map highlighting how these requirements differ across stages of the mine life cycle.

These insights will support industry with workforce planning, capability development, and the transition to more sustainable and effective mine closure practices.
