Review of the AUR30520 Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology

Through national consultation with industry stakeholders, the project will review the qualification and associated training products to address several issues identified by industry. These include the need for additional core competencies, greater coverage of marine-specific technologies, and stronger alignment with the skills required in contemporary marine workplaces.

The review will consider opportunities to strengthen training outcomes by:

• Increasing the number of core units within the qualification
• Introducing mandatory competencies related to marine propulsion systems
• Reducing reliance on units adapted from automotive contexts where marine-specific skills are required
• Enhancing coverage of marine electrical systems, diagnostics, and safety requirements
• Ensuring training products reflect the growing use of integrated electronic, hydraulic, and digitally controlled systems in modern vessels.

This project includes a review of an existing qualification and associated training products, as well as the potential development of new units of competency and a skill set.

The project aims to ensure graduates are job-ready and equipped with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and safety awareness required to work effectively across a broad range of marine service and repair environments.

The project is scheduled to commence in July 2026 and be completed by May 2028.
