Exploring vocational degrees and higher apprenticeships

Our support for the introduction of vocational degree qualifications

We will play a key role in developing a new qualification type, the Vocational Degree, which aims to lift Australia’s future workforce capability.

The new Vocational Degree will focus on advanced skill attainment, and the application of specialised knowledge and technical skills. Delivered through Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers, the Vocational Degree will leverage existing VET architecture, teaching expertise and practical knowledge to support future generations of learners, including through apprenticeship models.

"The introduction of the Vocational Degree qualification is exciting and provides a viable alternative to help students reach their career goals,” AUSMASA CEO Dr Gavin Lind said. "Until now, qualifications offered under VET included certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas. The Vocational Degree gives students another option to consider. Not only will students benefit from having more qualifications to choose from – industry will also gain access to highly qualified graduates with a blend of applied knowledge and skills.”

The 2023 Employment White Paper, Working Future, found that the workplace of the future will challenge the traditional ways we view job roles and occupations, and the education and training models required to meet student and employer demand. Jobs will increasingly require advanced technical knowledge and skills, particularly in key areas such as net zero transformation, the care and support economy, and advanced digitisation.

The Vocational Degree will allow the VET sector to modernise its education and training delivery and respond better to the skills needs in our changing economy, while also providing a degree pathway for students who prefer the VET learning environment.

TAFE Centres of Excellence will work with Jobs and Skills Councils (JSC) such as AUSMASA, industry, universities and other stakeholders to develop these qualifications. AUSMASA will be the first JSC to support the introduction of the Vocational Degree to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

“Our comprehensive study of vocational degrees and higher apprenticeships, driven by robust industry consultation, represents a pivotal step in modernising the education system to better align with workforce needs,” Dr Lind said. “By identifying use cases that resonate with industry, we aim to build pathways that enhance skill development and meet the demands of the rapidly evolving mining and automotive industries.”
