Using tailored training solutions to develop a skilled, safe and productive mining workforce.

In our May Member Spotlight, we speak with Elisa Uyen, CEO of The Pivot Institute and Mine Training Australia, about how the organisation is building a confident, job-ready mining workforce and how AUSMASA membership keeps them informed and actively contributing to skills and workforce development.

Tell us about your organisation. How do you support skills in mining and/or automotive?

Mine Training Australia is dedicated to strengthening workforce capability within the mining sector through high-quality, industry-aligned training and assessment solutions. We work closely with mining operators, contractors, and industry stakeholders to ensure that the skills being developed are not only compliant with national standards, but also practical, relevant, and immediately applicable on site.

We support skills development in mining by designing and delivering tailored training programs that address real operational needs. This includes everything from nationally recognised qualifications and units of competency through to site-specific training, verification of competency (VOC), and workforce upskilling initiatives.

A key focus for us is ensuring that training translates into safe, competent performance in the workplace. We achieve this by incorporating real-world scenarios, modern delivery methods, and strong engagement with industry to keep our programs current with evolving technologies and practices.

Ultimately, our goal is to help build a skilled, confident, and job-ready workforce that contributes to safer operations and improved productivity across the mining industry.

Why did you become an AUSMASA member?

We became an AUSMASA member because they play a critical role in the VET sector, helping ensure Australia’s workforce has the skills needed for the future. The mining industry is an enormous contributor to Australia’s economy and AUSMASA forms a valuable link between industry and the VET sector.

How do you think AUSMASA membership has enabled you to influence national skills and workforce development?

Our AUSMASA membership allows us to get involved to influence positive change in this area. We have been able to get in contact for feedback, ask questions and provide input on training and assessment for the mining industry. AUSMASA are great communicators through their phone calls, in person visits and website which allows us to stay up to date with our finger on the pulse of any changes.
