Making sense of the VET workforce: the VET Career Framework

Four themes. Four career stages. One shared map of the VET workforce journey.

Understanding the work of VET trainers and assessors, and how it evolves, is more complex than it first appears. It sits at the intersection of teaching practice, industry, wellbeing, and career progression, shaped by the realities of the systems in which they operate.

The Vocational Education Training (VET) Trainer and Assessor Career Framework (the framework) brings this complexity into a clearer, more practical form.

Developed through national consultation across the automotive and mining sectors, the framework reflects what trainers and assessors, industry, government and other key stakeholders told us about their work — what it looks like in practice, how it changes over time, and what supports are needed at different points in a career.

At its core, the framework provides a shared way to understand the VET workforce. It brings together 4 key themes: VET, wellbeing and support, industry, and career, which reflect the core dimensions of the work of VET trainers and assessors.

Within each theme, a series of topics reflects what the work involves in practice. These topics form the backbone of the framework, grouping insights from consultation into areas practitioners can recognise and engage with. Each topic is then mapped across 4 career stages: new entrant, establishing, advanced and expert, showing how the same area of work can look and feel different over time.

Importantly, the framework recognises that careers in VET are not linear. People may be at various stages across different areas of their work at the same time, and that is expected. This provides a more realistic and flexible view of capability and development across a VET career.

Dr Gavin Lind, Chief Executive Officer, AUSMASA, said, "This is an important moment for AUSMASA and its response to the VET Workforce Blueprint. What began as a comprehensive body of consultation insights is now coming to life as a practical, accessible set of resources designed to support the people working in the sector."

The VET Trainer and Assessor Career Framework sits at the centre of the VET Workforce Blueprint and provides a clear way to navigate the tools and resources being developed to support trainers and assessors and RTO and TAFE leaders. These include practical materials such as guidance documents, fact sheets, videos, and podcasts, all designed to support capability, wellbeing, career development, and long-term participation in the sector.

These resources will be housed in a dedicated online resource hub on AUSMASA’s website, providing an accessible way for trainers, assessors, RTOs and other stakeholders to engage with the materials.

The framework serves as the entry point, helping users find relevant content based on the area of work they are focused on and their career stage. Rather than needing to work through content sequentially, users can engage with the framework and resources in ways that reflect their own needs, whether that is building capability in a specific area, supporting others, or planning for longer-term workforce development.

Together, the framework and resource hub provide a practical foundation for understanding, supporting, and sustaining the VET workforce. They bring structure to a complex system, while remaining grounded in the realities of the role.

"As the sector continues to respond to change, from evolving industry requirements to shifts in technology and workforce expectations, a shared understanding of the workforce is more important than ever. The VET Trainer and Asessor Career Framework provides that foundation, and a practical way to engage with the resources now coming to life.

We want these resources to be actively used across the sector, by trainers and assessors, RTOs, TAFEs and workforce leaders, to support capability development, workforce planning and long-term participation in the VET sector."
