Australian Minerals and Energy Skills Alliance (AUSMESA)

From 2021 to 2022 we were the Australian Minerals and Energy Skills Alliance (AUSMESA), an independent organisation funded by the Australian Government to engage with the mining and energy sectors and put learners at the centre of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system.

We transitioned from the Mining Skills Organisation Pilot, that was developed in partnership with the Minerals Council of Australia, to become an independent organisation, facilitating greater industry and employer engagement with workforce and skills.

As AUSMESA we undertook significant work in the mining, energy and resources sector in preparation for the transition to become the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Council (JSC) for mining and automotive in early 2023.

Building on the extensive work already undertaken by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), AUSMESA invested in the transition to a JSC.

This included, but was not limited to:

  • Developing a detailed operating model, which places skills, learners and employers at its core.

  • Establishing a comprehensive governance model that detailed industry and stakeholder engagement mechanisms and approaches.

  • Building a transition roadmap that described the high-value and critical activities needed to successfully realise the JSC vision.

In early 2022 AUSMESA transitioned to become the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (AUSMASA), a Jobs and Skills Council funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

Mining Skills Organisation Pilot (MSOP)

The Mining Skills Organisation Pilot (MSOP) was born out of a 2019 Australian Government initiative led by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Skills Organisations were created to explore opportunities to strengthen engagement with the VET sector.

In partnership with the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the MSOP was created with the goal of supporting the minerals and resources industries in developing relationships with the VET sector, leading to increased engagement, and understanding of challenges and opportunities for all stakeholders.

The project focused on knowledge that Australia’s future workforce would be more geographically distributed and digitally connected than ever before, requiring skills that are adaptable, transferable, and applicable to future needs.

Extensive national industry consultation across 2019 and 2020 led to the MSOP forming four initial project hubs, based on the industry’s immediate need to increase both the capacity and capability of its workforce.
